Medical / Biomedical Technology

As a leader in biotech, this WIN customer develops and manufactures medical devices and diagnostic products for some of the world's leading healthcare corporations.

The Problem

"We had to integrate single board computers [SBC's], LCD panels and assemble the machines ourselves, but found that the quantities we needed were too small to justify the cost of in-house manufacturing. This is a high-end, low-volume product. Setting up our own manufacturing line for the sub-assemblies did not make sense. We could not have achieved any manufacturing economies-of-scale because of the low volumes."

Solution

"We hired WIN Enterprises to handle machine control subassembly, the SBC design and LCD integration for two of our systems. One system is a small-format (i.e., biscuit PC) motherboard complete with memory, CPU and disk drive."

"WIN assembled this solution with an LCD display mounted on a sheet metal subassembly and tested all components as a unit. Then we attached this subassembly to our blood analysis instrument. The second system is a small-format (i.e., slot PC) motherboard with a passive backplane, CPU, and hard disk drives. Each of these units was embedded into our medical instruments that incorporated the PC boards and our proprietary software"

"WIN offered extensive technical support and guidance to help us select and integrate the most cost-effective LCD and embedded PC components. They also provided subassemblies produced in a quality controlled environment to meet our standards and satisfy FDA requirements."

This customer also required a solution based on long-life embedded components to maximize product lifetime and to protect their extensive investment in certification costs.
